Night Time Sips
The Sips project was my first experience with slip casting. I wanted to begin to introduce functionality into my slip casted designs; one of the best ways to do this was through stacking. I began with the cups and fitted a bottle to it to create a carafe and cup set. I found the design had a certain novelty. I wanted to emphasize this notion by hand drawing on the “heads”, creating more personality in the design. I am inspired by storytelling ceramics, so I wanted to employ my own stories through my illustrations. With this personalization on each set, I find that the individual who interacts with the object resonates and connects to it more.
Drinkware, Design, Play
The nature of the object is meant for individual use. I originally intended the carafe and cup set to be for bedside water, however, many people who have interacted with the product have seen other uses for it as well! Either way, I see the product as a personal possession that has a ritualistic nature to its function. This furthered my want to add unique detailing to each set.
The design and making process followed similar steps to the Orb Lamps. Measuring, CAD, 3D printing, mold making, casting, trimming and glaze experimentation. Making these sets became quite seamless and simple due to the small scale; I ended up with many multiples which allowed me to make many glaze tests before deciding on the final surface designs.
